External Scholarships
There are many external scholarships available to study abroad students. These scholarships are not affiliated with Wheaton or a particular study abroad program and have varying eligibility requirements. External scholarship awards are issued to students directly. Popular external scholarships include:
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.
- Eligibility: Undergraduate students who receive Federal Pell Grant funding.
- Deadlines: early March and early October
- Award amounts: Up to $5,000 *Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship are then eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement. (Critical need languages include Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Swahili, and more).

Boren Awards for International Study
Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Applications are available at
- Deadlines: Early February following Academic Year
- Award amounts: up to $10,000 for a semester and $20,000 for a full academic year

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships (FEA)
The FEA has general and dedicated scholarships open to US citizens or permanent residents who study abroad for a minimum of four weeks.
- Deadline: Early January – for fall semester abroad; early September – for spring semester abroad
- Award amounts: Up to $10,000

FEA Access Partnership Scholarships
Through the Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship application, students are automatically considered for a variety of dedicated Access Partner Scholarships, including:
- The A. Rewari Scholarship (for students to study in Denmark)
- Rainbow Scholarship (for LGBTQ+ students)
- Education in Ireland Scholarship (for study at University College Cork)

Freeman-ASIA Scholarship
Freeman-ASIA provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Applicants should have a minimum 2.8 GPA. The program’s goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others.
Deadline: Every April – for the following Academic Year
Award amounts: Up to $5,000

Explore the World Travel Scholarship
This scholarship is for aspiring global travelers who want to give back while they experience another culture. Recipients must be participating in a program with an educational or service component.
- Eligibility: US citizen or permanent resident with demonstrated financial need.
- Deadline: Early March for the following Academic Year
- Award amounts: $2,000 (two installments of $1,000)
