Work authorization allows you to gain hands-on experience and build your resume while studying as an international student at Wheaton College. Depending on your visa type, you can pursue four distinct on- and off-campus work and training options:
- On-campus jobs: Earn money and gain experience right on campus
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT): Earn academic credit for off-campus internships or training programs that connect to your classes
- Optional Practical Training (OPT): Work off-campus in the U.S. for up to one year (or longer for STEM majors) in a job directly related to your major
- Academic training: Access paid or unpaid professional opportunities designed specifically for exchange students with a J-1 visa
How do I obtain work authorization?
All on- or off-campus employment, practicums or internships, whether paid or unpaid, require authorization from International Student Services in the Center for Global Education. Review the opportunities below for eligibility requirements.
On-Campus Employment
As an international student with an F-1 Visa, you are eligible for on-campus employment.
- Academic year: Up to 20 hours per week.
- College breaks: Up to 40 hours per week
- Government approval: U.S. Department of Homeland Security work authorization is not required for on-campus jobs.
Off-Campus Training and Employment
Training and employment opportunities vary based on your visa status.
1. Optional Practical Training (OPT) — ( F-1 visa required)
Having an F-1 visa also makes you eligible for Optional Practical Training (OP). This allows you to gain work experience in the U.S. before or after you graduate from Wheaton. OPT requires a government-issued Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) before you begin work.

2. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) — (F-1 visa required)
With an F-1 visa you may also pursue off-campus employment, internships or practicum training, provided the experience is integrated with your academic program (either for academic credit or required for graduation). No government authorization required.

3. Academic Training (AT) — (J-1 visa required)
With a J-1 visa you may participate in paid or unpaid employment related to your academic program before or after you graduate. No government authorization required.
Duration: Up to a maximum of 18 months (not to exceed the length of your full-time study at Wheaton)
Sponsor approval: Authorization must be granted in writing on your Form DS-2019 by your J-1 visa sponsor before you begin working
Post grad training: Must be authorized before your program ends and begin work within 30 days of your program end date.
