First-Year Writing
Every member of our English department teaches First-Year Writing(English 101). For a list of First-Year Writing topics, see First-Year Writing Courses.
Normally topic-based, the first-year writing course is designed to introduce students to elements of academic literacy in which writing serves as a source of inquiry and students are active, questioning agents. Course work includes developing thesis statements; selecting, organizing, presenting and documenting evidence, and refining prose. Students in this course confer individually with faculty about their writing and often receive practice in writing workshops, which may take many different forms. Ideally students in this course learn to become reflective practitioners of an ancient but continuously evolving craft.
