Hurricane Katrina: Organizing the campus response Our thoughts and concerns are with the people of the Gulf Coast areas struggling to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Members of the Wheaton community are joining in the groundswell of philanthropic activity in support of our fellow Americans in the South. This web site will keep you posted on Wheaton's organized response to the disaster.
We encourage alumnae, alumni and friends of Wheaton living in the affected regions to check in with us to let us know how you are doing. Send an e-mail to the Office of Alumnaei Relations at alumnaei@wheatoncollege.edu. With your permission, your message will be posted on this site.
A message from the Dean of Students
September 8, 2005
Members of the community gathered Tuesday afternoon to discuss Wheaton's response to the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina. It is clear that this horrific event has left many feeling helpless or angry at the grave injustices of our society that were exposed by the response to victims of the storm.
Students, staff and faculty were united in our determination that it is important for each of us to take action: first by getting engaged in the
immediate rescue and rebuilding but also long term, by examining the societal, economic and governmental policies that exacerbated this tragedy.
There were many suggestions for fundraising and other ways to respond. The sentiment of those present was to initiate efforts to provide immediate help and undertake a major fundraising drive while exploring ways to target our funds to a meaningful, localized recipient: perhaps rebuilding a home or providing supplies for a school or college. This will be a topic of discussion as the campus begins to raise money. The coordinating groups will explore direct connections with communities in the affected areas of the South.
Four Coordinating Groups were established and will publish meeting times in the next few days. Please consider joining one of these groups by emailing the convenor. If you have suggestions for fundraising that could be done by your club, team, hall or friends and co-workers, please direct those to the fundraising group. Your ideas for all the groups are welcomed and encouraged.
Let's all get moving!!
The coordinating groups and their convenors are:
Fundraising: Ebony Williams
Supplies and Donations: Alice Kellogg
Direct service/travel to the South in January/Spring Break/Summer: Laura Tschop
Communication: Alex Dewar (temporary convenor)
(If you were present at the meeting on Tuesday and signed up for one of these groups, the leader has your name.)
