PDF Navigation hints

What is a PDF?

PDFs, or portable document formats, allow documents to be shared and viewed across platforms.

Adobe's free Acrobat Reader software allows you to view these documents. PDF documents should automatically open within your browser window. If they do not, try tweaking your browser preferences (under the file menu) so that they will.

The PDF documents of the Quarterly are optimized for screen viewing. Should you choose to print the document, it should be legible but may be of lesser quality than what you see on your computer screen.

What's the best way to download a pdf?

For ease of viewing, it is recommended that you download the document to your computer and then open it using Adobe Acrobat's free reader. Here's how:

If you are a Windows user, right-click on the link to open a dialog box and select the option "Save target as."

If you are a Mac user, hold down the control key and click on the link to
open the dialog box and select "download link to disk."

(If your browser is configured with the Acrobat plug-in and you have a high-speed connection, you may be able to view the document in your Web browser.)

If you need the free Adobe Acrobat reader, click here.

Once I've opened the PDF version of the Quarterly, what next?

You'll notice that you can view the entire publication when you click on the image of the cover.

Whenever you open a PDF publication in Acrobat, it's important to know a few basics. First, be aware of the box with a percentage shown at the bottom left of your screen. Changing the number in this box allows you to fit the publication onto your screen or view it at 100 percent, or up to 400 percent. You'll also want to become comfortable using the arrow keys, also at the bottom of your screen. Clicking on these allows you to navigate the publication manually by page numbers.

Finally, we've provided extra navigation features so can find what you want quickly. When text is highlighted by a box (usually blue or white), this indicates a link. You'll first notice these links on the table of contents page. Links let a viewer jump immediately to an article, to a new e-mail message or even to a Web site that is referred to within the text.
