NEWS @ Wheaton, July 2005

With summer's change of pace and break from classes, many people at Wheaton seek new challenges. For Associate Professor of Philosophy Nancy Kendrick (left) and philosophy student Heather Mills '06, the challenge of choice was a "sprint distance" triathlon on the shores of Narragansett Bay.

After months of training together, the pair participated in a July 9 triathlon at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I.—tackling a 500-meter swim in the bay, an 11-mile bike ride and a three-mile run. Kendrick completed the event in 1:41:26, and Mills's total time of 1:21:11 won her fourth place in her competition class.

The contest was Kendrick's third triathlon and Mills's first—though it won't be her last. The faculty-student duo is training for another triathlon in Barrington, R.I., in August.
