The Community Service Council sponsored a pumpkin-carving marathon in the Balfour-Hood atrium on October 20 to raise money for a good cause and help Boston set a new record for the most jack-o-lanterns lit in one place.
The Wheaton students contributed 175 carved pumpkins to the Life Is Good Pumpkin Festival, held on Boston Common the following day. Thirty service council members also volunteered at the festival itself, where they carved on into the evening alongside scores of other volunteers. Together they amassed more than 30,000 jack-o-lanterns, smashing the previous record of almost 29,000, held by Keene, N.H., since 2003.
The pumpkin festival raised more than $250,000 for Camp Sunshine, a retreat in Casco, Maine, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, according to Greta Phillips '09, co-president of the service council.
"I think the pumpkin carving on campus was a great way to get Wheaton involved with such a fun and meaningful event," Phillips said. "With our donated pumpkins and our donated volunteer hours in Boston, we contributed a lot to the world record and to the charity."
