CAMPUS NEWS AND EVENTS
Commencement Reunion weekend
Family members and alumnae/i joined with the campus community on May 21 in celebrating the college's newest graduates, the Class of 2005. Commencement speaker Charlayne Hunter-Gault, former correspondent for PBS and CNN, decried the erosion of public trust in journalism and urged the 431 graduates to defend the democratic institutions that safeguard freedom. Hunter-Gault spoke from her perspectives as a veteran journalist, now based in South Africa, and as the first black woman to attend the University of Georgia some 40 years ago. (Read transcript.)
The college presented honorary degrees to Hunter-Gault and to Jean Jones Beard and Alexandra Marshall of the Class of 1965. See the commencement web site for links to photos, special honors and more.
Commencement's extra inning
With the Wheaton baseball team participating in tournament play this spring, the team's seven seniors were unable to attend Commencement. But Wheaton had the bases covered with a special graduation ceremony for the players on May 24. (More)

ANNUAL FUND
Let us count the ways
Your support of the Annual Fund helps bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of a Wheaton education. If you haven't yet given this year, please consider doing so before our fiscal year ends on June 30. It's a snap to make your gift online.
PHOTO OF THE MONTH
The Class of 2005
A good-bye as well as a beginning, Commencement is an occasion marked by intense emotion, as reflected on the faces of our graduates. (View photograph.)
ATHLETICS
Hot Bat
Chris Denorfia '02, former Wheaton baseball standout, is now tearing up the diamond in the International League as a right fielder for the Louisville Bats. Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2002, Denorfia was promoted to the Triple-A affiliate this May. Last week, Denorfia nabbed "Star of the Day" honors on MinorLeagueBaseball.com after driving in five runs on three hits--including his first Triple-A homer--in a 6-1 victory over Charlotte. (More.) Catch this rising star in Pawtucket July 18-21, when Denorfia and the Bats are scheduled to play the PawSox in four night games. Come on out to the ballpark.
