Honoring Dale Rogers Marshall
Want to share your best stories, well wishes and thanks with President Marshall? Wheaton is hosting an online scrapbook just for that purpose, and we invite all members of the Wheaton community to contribute photos, memories and farewell messages. Upon her retirement from Wheaton on June 30, the college will present the collected electronic well wishes to Dale in a more enduring and lasting format for her to treasure when she leaves Norton. Talkin' 'bout kids' education
Education professor Mary Lee Griffin is a proponent of standards and quality education, but she is also an outspoken opponent of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Her public commentaries on the failings of federal education policy earned her an invitation to discuss the subject in an online chat with Washington Post education writer Evelyn Vuko. The online discussion is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 9, at 2 p.m. You can "tune in" to the discussion and post your own questions for Professor Griffin by visiting
Bacteria on the airwaves
From hot springs to smelly cheese, it was all about bacteria on last week's edition of "Science Friday," National Public Radio's weekly call-in science program. Professor of Biology Betsey Dexter Dyer '75, author of A Field Guide to Bacteria, was guest expert, discussing the vast beauty and variety of earth's most abundant organisms, and the important part they play in human and environmental good health. Tune in to hear more on the "Science Friday" Web site.
Lessons in diplomacy
Thirteen Wheaton students got a firsthand lesson in diplomacy at the Harvard National Model United Nations in Boston last month, and one of them took home an award for his efforts. (Read more.)
Helping hands
Students and alumnae/i will team up on Saturday, April 3, for a day of community service and friendship at Handi Kids, Inc., a recreational facility in Bridgewater serving children and young adults with physical and cognitive challenges. The Wheaton volunteers will pitch in to help ready the facility's therapeutic horseback riding center for spring and prepare the grounds for a new gardening program. Wheaton students and alumnae/i are invited to participate in this volunteer project, which is sponsored by the Student Alumnae/i Council (SAC) and the Office of Alumnae/i Relations & Annual Giving. Learn more about Handi Kids online and RSVP by April 1 to Mary Lavin in Alumnae/i Relations, 508-286-8207.
Athletics
Off to the races
Last year the women's track and field team won its fifth consecutive national championship, tying Louisiana State University for the second-longest winning streak in women's indoor track and field history. This year, they are looking to make it an astounding six in a row. Follow the action on Wheaton's Web site when both the men and women's teams head to the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater for the national championship meet, March 12-13.
