How he spent his summer vacation
Jared Duval '05, an environmental activist and winner of a 2003 Morris K. Udall scholarship, co-founded the Wheaton chapter of Students for Dean last spring. Now, with the support of a Wheaton Fellows award, he's spending his summer as a full-time intern at the Burlington, Vermont, campaign headquarters of Howard Dean, one of nine Democrats in the 2004 presidential race. The lifestyle is basic and the hours are long, but Duval calls it "the experience of a lifetime." (More.)

Admissions ambassadors
Are you a Wheaton alum living in Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, Philadelphia, upstate New York, Chicago, Seattle or Houston? Would you like to play an important role in recruiting students from your area to Wheaton? Then the Alumnae/i Parent Admission Committee (APAC) wants you! APAC volunteers serve the college by referring applicants, representing Wheaton at college fairs, conducting off-campus interviews, hosting events and more. As an APAC volunteer, you will be a vital link between the college and potential students, personalizing the admissions process and being among the first to congratulate newly admitted candidates! To learn more, visit APAC on the Web or send an e-mail to Kelly Lauriat.

Magazine's college rankings "fatally flawed," Marshall asserts
In a July 22 op-ed piece on MSNBC.com, Wheaton President Dale Rogers Marshall issued an incisive critique of the college rankings devised annually by U.S. News & World Report. "Top-ten and best-seller lists entertain us all by reflecting the Zeitgeist, but they are not good guides for making major life decisions," Marshall wrote. "That's an important point for college-bound students and their families to remember when they look at the new U.S. News & World Report college rankings. The magazine's decision this year to drop from its consideration the statistic known as the yield rate is attracting lots of attention, but it won't change the fact that the rankings it publishes to such great fanfare are fatally flawed. And they will remain that way." (Read the full story, "Education by the Numbers," now available on CollegeNews.org.)
