April 26, 2000
A member of Wheaton's incoming Class of 2004 has been named Maine's Youth of the Year for her academic accomplishments, high school leadership and community volunteer work in Portland.
The incoming Wheaton freshman Genet Gebrewahd won the state Boys and Girls Club award on April 18 and was presented with a $25,000 scholarship. She will be considered for regional Youth of the Year honors in June.
Gebrewahd is profiled on the front page of the April 26th edition of The Portland Press Herald. For the complete story, go to www.portland.com/wenews/0004261A1YOUTH.shtml.
Wheaton is a selective, private liberal arts college. More than 3,100 high school students from around the country applied for admission to Wheaton this year, a nearly 30 percent increase in applicants over last year. Gebrewahd will be one of approximately 400 members of the Class of 2004.
