Marine lecture series at Wheaton hosts whale expert

March 4, 2000

Learn what today[base ']s scientists are doing to solve problems of Atlantic fisheries regulation, depletion of whale populations and biodiversity through Wheaton College[base ']s Marine Conservation Biology Lecture Series.

Funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration[base ']s (NOAA) Sea Grant College Program, the Marine Conservation Biology Lecture Series will bring a total of six scientists over two years to Wheaton to present their research on marine conservation biology. The series comes as Wheaton's programs in environmental science and environmental studies, begun within the last five years, grow in popularity and prestige with students. It also marks the second marine science lecture series that Sea Grant has sponsored at Wheaton.

For the first lecture, Dr. Frank Cipriano of the Conservation Genetics Laboratory at San Francisco State University will speak on his research, ''Molecular Genetic Approaches to Monitoring Whaling.'' Dr. Cipriano will speak in the Hindle Auditorium of the Science Center at 7:00 p.m. on March 7, 2000.

All three lectures are open to the public without charge. For more information contact Professor Scott Shumway, chair of the Wheaton Biology Department and organizer of the lecture series at 508-286-3945 or sshumway@wheatonma.edu.
