Artist's Statement

"My name is George Flett, member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians, here in Wellpinit, Washington. I'd like to make an artist's statement on the ideas of ledger art, work that I do. I think, as an Indian artist, we all want to please the spirits of our elders. Families are having their medicine dances, especially at this time of year, in our tribe here, and it becomes very important for me to do the art that ties into what our Indian people feel about bringing good fortune to all people through the medicine dances that we have. We call them 'thump dances'. . . . Now in January, February, these dances are held by several different families. . . .so this time of year is pretty strong for me to be doing. . . traditional styles of art. "--George Flett narrating exhibit video.
