What We Know

In a 4-year evaluation using a number of quantitative and qualitative measures, we learned that Wheaton faculty support the value of experiential teaching and learning to:

  • link experiences to course objectives
  • build meaningful experiential opportunities into the course
  • develop ongoing partnerships with community sites
  • integrate meaningful reflection, critical thinking, and writing activities

A November 2002 survey of academic departments showed that all of our departments use experiential teaching & learning and nearly half of our courses include some form of experiential teaching & learning.

60 % of Wheaton's academic departments use:

independent research
teaching assistant
Academic Festival presentation

Almost 50% use:

labs
service learning
professional presentations
attending professional meetings
faculty research partnerships

More than 20% use:

field research or observation
field work, internship
community service,volunteering
study abroad
performance

And 5-10% use:

other (practice teaching, etc.)
