Wheaton College Mission Statement
The mission of Wheaton College is to provide an excellent liberal arts education in a small, residential coeducational learning community, enabling students to understand and participate in shaping the multicultural, interdependent world of which they are a part. Collaborations with faculty and staff challenge and transform students into lifelong learners with skills to become problem solvers committed to justice and the global community. Wheaton teaches men and women to live and work as equal partners by linking learning, work and service in a community which values equally the contributions of men and women.
Overview of Disability Services
Mission
Wheaton is committed to ensuring equitable participation in all programs and activities of the College. As a recipient of Federal assistance, we are committed to the prohibition of discrimination in the recruitment, admission, and education of students with disabilities. We strive to support Wheaton students to reach their potential in learning and living within the College community and in the world at large. In seeking to meet this commitment, Wheaton recognizes that students differ in their needs and learning styles. In addition, we understand that an informed College community is better able to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Goals
- Provide appropriate and reasonable accommodations and support services to students with disabilities on a case by case basis, based upon their documentation.
- Educate the Wheaton community on the rights and needs of students with disabilities.
- Provide a safe and welcoming environment for students with disabilities.
- Assist the College to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990(ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended 2009.
Confidentiality
The American with Disabilities Act and the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) have established guidelines for confidentiality of all disability-related information. Documentation and any communication related to a student's disability is maintained in strict confidentiality and is released only on a need-to-know basis, as authorized in writing by the student, except in cases required by law.
