Wheaton reaches 10-win plateau behind 9-0 victory in South Carolina

HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College women's tennis team recorded 10 wins for the second consecutive season, and the third time in eight years, behind a 9-0 defeat of Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday. The Lyons are 10-6, while the Battling Bishops fell to 1-5.

Wheaton's top two doubles tandems won their matches handily, as freshmen Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) notched an 8-3 victory at number one, while senior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) combined for an 8-2 win in the second position.

At number three, juniors Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) battled for an 8-6 triumph.

During singles play, Geocaris at number two and Knies in the third slot yielded only two games apiece, Farmer won by an 8-3 count at six, and freshman Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) captured a 6-4, 6-2 decision at four.

In the top spot, Teague rallied after losing the first set to pull out a 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 triumph. Milic-Strkalj matched the feat at five behind a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory.

The Lyons complete their four-match spring trip tomorrow against Baldwin-Wallace College of Ohio at 12:00 p.m.
