Teague reaches quarterfinals of NEWITT Tournament as six Lyons competeOctober 20, 2007 AMHERST, MA- Freshman Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) won a pair of matches and advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) before bowing out to the second seed from Amherst College. Amherst is serving as the host of the three-day tournament. Teague knocked off Mount Holyoke College senior Meaghan Sloane (Concord, MA/Lawrence Academy) in round one by a score of 6-2, 6-1 on Friday and downed Wesleyan University junior Ania Preneta (Boston, MA/Boston Latin School) by a 7-6, 6-2 final in the second round on Saturday. She then suffered a 6-3, 6-0 setback to Amherst senior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY/Poly Prep). Wheaton's other singles victory came in the fifth flight, when senior captain Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) earned a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Bates College freshman Eliza Kano-Bower (Wayland, MA/Wayland) before dropping a three-set match to a foe from New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart Babson College. Milic-Strkalj also teamed up with freshman Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) in the second doubles flight and edged a tandem from Suffolk University, 8-6. The Lyons then succumbed to the third-seeded Bowdoin duo, 8-3. Van Faasen picked up a singles bye in the opening round of the fourth flight before dropping a 6-1, 6-1 result to the second seed from Amherst. Freshmen Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) lost their opening matches in the second and sixth singles slots, respectively. In doubles action, Geocaris and Teague lost in the opening round of the first flight, while Cordes and sophomore Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) fell in the third flight. The Lyons conclude their fall slate at next weekend's NEWMAC Championship, hosted by Wellesley College.
