Lyons fall short of Babson women, 6-3 in final regular season match

October 13, 2007

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team wrapped up its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate on a down note Saturday, falling to Babson College, 6-3 in its regular season finale on the Clark Tennis Courts.

Dropping their third straight match to fall to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in league play, the Lyons finished fifth in the conference standings and will play fourth-seeded Smith College in the NEWMAC Tournament beginning on Saturday, October 27. Babson, which won for the third straight time, improves to 9-3 and 5-2. The Beavers placed third in the league and will face sixth-seeded Mount Holyoke College in the tournament.

Babson captured two victories in three decisive doubles matches to begin play this afternoon. Junior Kali Hogan (Clinton, MA/Clinton) and sophomore Jessica Huang (Andover, MA/Groton School) posted an 8-2 triumph in the second slot, while senior Jamie Burke (Burlington, MA/Burlington) and sophomore Lorena Beccera (Key Biscayne, FL/Gulliver Preparatory School) were victorious by an 8-4 final at number three.

Wheaton freshmen Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) had little difficulty in the top doubles position, sweeping juniors Courtney Farrell (Burlington, MA/Burlington) and Heather Walsh (Warwick, RI/The Prout School). However, Farrell and Walsh redeemed themselves in singles play, each coming from a set down to win their respective matches at number one and three.

Geocaris and freshman Bethany Pine (Providence, RI/Wheeler School) were the lone Lyons to win singles matches, as Geocaris registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the second position while Pine allowed just four games at number six. The Beavers remaining two points came from Huang's 6-2, 6-2 decision in the fourth spot and Becerra's 6-3, 7-5 win at number five.

The Lyons return to action next weekend for the three-day New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst College. Play begins on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
