Lyons fall for just second time in 13 matches, drop 7-2 decision at MITOctober 2, 2007 CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team lost for just the second time in 13 matches on Tuesday, dropping a 7-2 decision to three-time defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament runner-up Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Lyons are now 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the league, while the Engineers are 5-1 and 5-0. In doubles action, Wheaton's third-position tandem of freshmen Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) and Bethany Pine (Providence, RI/Wheeler School) came the closest to pulling out a victory, narrowly dropping a 9-7 decision to sophomores Emily Onufer (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) and Katie Smyth (Stillwater, MN/Mahtomedi). MIT's top two duos won 8-2 and 8-1, respectively. Freshman Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) corralled a 6-1, 6-3 victory in second singles for one of only two Wheaton points on the day. Senior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) notched the other, coming from behind against sophomore Anisa McCree (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) in the fourth spot with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 triumph. In fifth singles, Cordes battled junior Karina Pikhart (Granada Hills, CA/Cleveland) before dropping the first set, 7-5 and coming up short in the second, 6-1. For MIT, senior Mariah Hoover (Orlando, FL/Trinity Preparatory), sophomore Leslie Hansen (Fairfax, VA/Thomas Jefferson) and freshman Jenny Dohlman (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) had the other three singles wins, all in straight sets.
