NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team matched its longest winning streak in eight seasons Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons improved to 6-0 following their 9-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) sweep over Springfield College in Beard Field House.

Extending its unbeaten stretch to 10 matches dating back to spring 2007, Wheaton saw its league record improve to 2-0. The Pride is now 0-3 and 0-2.

Senior captain Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) spearheaded the doubles sweep with an 8-1 decision in the second spot.

Freshmen Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) posted an 8-3 final in the top doubles slot to remain undefeated this fall, while classmates Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) and Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) won 8-4 in the third position.

In singles play, Geocaris recorded a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at two, Milic-Strkalj surrendered just two games at five, and Van Faasen won 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth slot. Teague and Cordes captured 6-2, 6-2 victories in the first and sixth positions, respectively, while Knies defeated sophomore Rachel Kushma (London, England/ACS Hillingdon International School) 7-5, 6-0 at number three.

The Lyons will face their toughest test of the season Tuesday afternoon when they welcome nationally-ranked Wellesley College for a 4:00 p.m. conference tilt. Wellesley is ranked 16th nationally and sixth in the Northeast according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
