Lyons move to 5-0 following 6-3 victory at Union in indoor complex

September 9, 2007

SCHENECTADY, NY- The Wheaton College women's tennis team played indoors for the first time this fall due to inclement weather in upstate New York but the outcome was the same, as the Lyons downed host Union College, 6-3 in non-conference action Sunday to improve to 5-0. Wheaton has won nine straight matches dating back to last spring, while the Dutchwomen remain winless through two matches.

For the first time this fall, the Lyons found themselves in a deficit following doubles action, as only the first tandem of freshmen Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) emerged victorious with an 8-3 final.

Classmates Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) and Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) put up a good fight before succumbing 8-6 in the third position, while senior captain Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) dropped an 8-5 decision in the second spot.

The Lyons bounced back by taking five of six singles matches, with Cordes and Teague leading the pack. Cordes gave up just two games in the sixth slot, while Teague registered a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory in the top position. Van Faasen notched a 6-2, 6-2 outcome at four, Milic-Strkalj won 6-4, 6-2 in the fifth spot, while Geocaris responded from a first-set loss at two to win 6-3 in the second set and 10-8 in a super tiebreaker.

Wheaton will have the week off before returning to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. home match against Springfield College.
