Wheaton continues perfect start with Labor Day shutoutSeptember 3, 2007 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team remained perfect on the young season with a 9-0 victory over Gordon College on Monday during a Labor Day match on the Clark Tennis Courts. The win was the Lyons' seventh straight dating back to last season and pushed them to 3-0 overall. The Fighting Scots opened their schedule today. For the second straight match, freshmen Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hills School) and Katherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) blanked their opponent by an 8-0 count in the first doubles slot. Senior captain Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) notched an 8-3 win at two, while the freshman tandem of Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) and Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) yielded just two games at number three. Wheaton's singles players combined to drop only eight games, as all six Lyons swept through their matches. Teague, Knies and Milic-Strkalj corralled 6-0, 6-0 wins in the first, third and fifth positions, respectively. At two, Geocaris notched a 6-1, 6-1 triumph, as did Van Faasen in the fourth spot. Cordes rattled off a 6-2, 6-2 win in the sixth slot. Wheaton jumps into New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, as the Lyons hit the road to face Clark University at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
