Lyons emerge victorious against NCAA Tournament team Simmons, 8-1September 1, 2007 BOSTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team emerged victorious for the second time in as many days Saturday afternoon, defeating Simmons College, 8-1 in non-conference action. The Lyons raised their record to 2-0, while the Sharks opened their season after advancing to last year's NCAA Tournament. Freshmen Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) set the tone early by blanking their opponents to begin doubles action. After trailing by a 4-1 count at number two, senior captain Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) stormed back to win 8-5. In the tightest match of the day, the first-year tandem of Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) and Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) posted a 9-7 victory to complete the doubles sweep. During singles action, Geocaris and Knies each shut out their opponents in the first set en route to convincing straight-set wins in the second and third positions, respectively. Teague allowed just two games in the top slot, Van Faasen needed a tiebreaker to complete her two-set victory at four, and Milic-Strkalj used a super tiebreaker score of 10-6 to win in the fifth spot. Wheaton returns to Norton on Labor Day for a non-conference match with Gordon College. Monday's action is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 7/31/08. |
