Wheaton women's tennis opens season with 9-0 victory over Salve Regina

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match dating back to last season by downing Salve Regina University, 9-0 on Friday during each team's season opener on the Clark Tennis Courts.

The Lyons yielded a total of seven games during doubles action, with senior captain Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) teaming for the most convincing victory, an 8-1 triumph in the second position.

A pair of freshman tandems each notched 8-3 wins, as Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) combined at the first spot, and Chelsea Cordes (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown) and Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) teamed at number three.

Each of Wheaton's six singles players won in straight sets. Knies and Milic-Strkalj corralled 6-0, 6-1 victories in the third and fifth positions, respectively, while Geocaris opened her collegiate singles career with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number two. Teague earned a 6-2, 6-3 triumph in the top spot, Van Faasen won by a 6-4, 6-4 count at four, and Cordes notched a 6-4, 6-1 win in the sixth position.

The Lyons return to action tomorrow with a contest at Simmons College at 12:00 p.m.
