Third straight sweep moves Lyons to 3-0 in triumph at Gordon

September 3, 2008

WENHAM, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team cruised to its third straight 9-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Gordon College, as the Lyons spoiled the Fighting Scots' season opener to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

A trio of 8-1 finals in doubles play pushed the Blue and White to a quick 3-0 advantage. Sophomores Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) sided in the top spot, senior Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and freshman Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School) teamed up at two, and senior Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) and sophomore Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex Regional) were at three.

In singles action, DiOrio, Federico, Geocaris, Teague and Van Faasen collected their second victories of the day, while freshman Rosalyn Chesky (South Hadley, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) rounded out the singles wins. The sextet allowed a mere seven games in completing the team sweep.

Geocaris blanked her opponent in the second position, while Teague, DiOrio, Van Faasen and Federico gave up just one game each at one, three, four and six, respectively. Chesky downed her counterpart by a 6-2, 6-1 final in the fifth slot.

Wheaton will face its toughest test of the season next Tuesday at Division II Bentley College. Match time in Waltham is set for 3:30 p.m.
