2006 NEWMAC WOMEN'S TENNIS TOURNAMENT - Mount Holyoke avenges regular season loss against Wheaton, advances to semifinalOctober 28, 2006 NORTON, MA- Third-seeded Mount Holyoke College avenged its regular season loss to host Wheaton College with a 5-3 victory in the first round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Saturday afternoon at Wheaton's Beard Field House. Now 6-4 overall, Mount Holyoke advances to tonight's semifinal round and will face second-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Wheaton, which entered today's match as the sixth seed, completes the fall portion of its schedule with a 7-5 record. Mount Holyoke started doubles play strong with a pair of convincing victories in the first and third positions, but Wheaton responded in the second slot to salvage a 2-1 deficit heading into singles action. Mount Holyoke sophomores Ashley Fallon (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) and Angela Horner (Bismarck, ND/Century) swept the opposition in the top spot, while senior Aleksandra Mihailovic (Sibenik, Croatia/Red Cross Nordic UWC) and junior Meaghan Sloane (Concord, MA/Lawrence Academy) accounted for an 8-2 win at number three. In the second spot, Wheaton senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) knocked off senior Anjali Bhalodia (Rajkot, India/Hebron School) and freshman Helena Jedziniak (Columbia, SC/Hammond) by an 8-6 count. The two teams began the singles competition by splitting their first four matches, with Mount Holyoke taking a 4-3 lead. Freshman Bo Kim (Sarasota, FL/Pine View) provided Mount Holyoke with the winning point after defeating first-year Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) 7-6, 6-2 in the fourth slot. Also victorious for Mount Holyoke were Horner at number one and Bhalodia in the fifth spot. For Wheaton, McDermott and senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) recorded wins in the second and third positions. Weiss posted a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at number two, and McDermott earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the third slot.
