Lyons fall for just second time this season, drop 7-2 decision to MITOctober 3, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team fell for just the second time in its last 11 matches with a 7-2 loss to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) co-leader Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Tuesday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts. Wheaton is now 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the league, while MIT is 5-1 and 5-0. The Engineers kicked off the day by taking two of three doubles matches. Wheaton earned its point in the third spot, as junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) picked up an 8-4 victory. MIT senior Joanna MacKay (North Andover, MA/Central Catholic) and freshman Leslie Hansen (Fairfax, VA/Thomas Jefferson) combined on an 8-2 win at number one, while the tandem of junior Mariah Hoover (Orlando, FL/Trinity Preparatory) and sophomore Yi Wang (Woodinville, WA/Inglemoor) won, 8-4 in the second position. In singles, five MIT players won in straight sets, while freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) picked up the Lyons' lone point at number four. Knies downed freshman Anisa McCree (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional), 6-3 in the first set before battling to a 7-5 victory in the second to clinch the match win. Hansen yielded one point at the top spot to lead the Engineers in singles, while Wang allowed two at number three. Hoover and MacKay surrendered three points each in the second and fifth positions, respectively, while senior Emily Chen (Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista) notched a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at six.
