Wheaton avenges tournament loss with 6-3 win over Mount HolyokeSeptember 30, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team avenged a loss during the first round of the 2005 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament with a 6-3 victory over Mount Holyoke College Saturday on the Clark Tennis Courts during Homecoming weekend. In their first match since September 19, the Lyons improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC. The visitors fell to 2-3 and 2-2. Wheaton took a 2-1 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. Senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) combined for an 8-4 victory at the top spot, while senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) followed suit at number two. In the third slot, senior Aleksandra Mihailovic (Sibenik, Croatia, Red Cross Nordic UWC) and junior Meaghan Sloane (Concord, MA/Lawrence Academy) paired for Mount Holyoke's doubles win by an 8-3 count. During singles action, Wheaton broke the match open by taking four of six points. McDermott yielded only one point during a win at number three, while Knies picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the fourth position. Weiss and junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School), on the other hand, overcame big first-game losses to each win in three. Sophomore Ashley Fallon (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) put Weiss in a 1-0 hole thanks to a 6-1 opening-set win before Weiss took the final two games, 6-1 and 6-1. Milic-Strkalj was blanked by freshman Sarah London (Mount Pleasant, SC/Academic Magnet) in their opener before rallying behind 6-3 and 6-0 victories. Senior Anjali Bhalodia (Rajkot, India/Hebron School) and sophomore Angela Horner (Bismarck, ND/Century) notched Mount Holyoke's singles points, as Horner took home a 6-2, 6-2 decision in the top spot and Bhalodia earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number five. Wheaton plays host to another NEWMAC counterpart on Tuesday, as the Blue and White opposes Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 4:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
