Weiss leads four women's tennis players at ITA Regional Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, MA- Senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) led a quartet of Wheaton College women's tennis players at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Tournament Friday at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Weiss picked up an opening round victory in the 64-player singles field.

Weiss knocked off New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart and freshman Celina Grisi (La Paz, Bolivia/Mariscal Braun) from Clark University by a final of 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 before falling to Bowdoin College senior Christine D'Elia (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) also competed in singles action this afternoon. McDermott began play with a 6-2, 6-0 setback to Middlebury College junior Amy Berkman (Shelburne, VT/Rice Memorial), followed by a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Williams College junior Anne Schneidman (Sherborn, MA) in a consolation match.

Jackson also dropped a pair of matches on the afternoon, including falling to eighth-seeded Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY/Poly Prep) of Amherst College by a count of 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. For the consolation match, Jackson succumbed to Bates College junior Cecilia Grissa (Doylestown, PA/George School) 6-4, 6-4.

In the 32-team doubles field, Weiss and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) took Tufts University sophomore Mari Homma (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) and freshman Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI/Mount Saint Charles) to a tiebreaker before falling, 9-7. Jackson and McDermott lost to Trinity College sophomores Sarah Gould (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) and Amanda Tramont (Miami, FL/Gulliver Prep), 8-3.

The twosomes also dropped their consolation matches, as Knies and Weiss suffered an 8-4 setback to conference foe Smith College, falling to senior Kathryn Johnson (Auburn, KS/Washburn Rural) and junior Catherine Lydecker (Conway, NH/Kennett). Jackson and McDermott battled Tufts seniors Kylyn Deary (Jackson, MI/Heritage Academy) and Jennifer Luten (Clayton, MO/Clayton) before bowing, 8-6.

Wheaton breaks for the week before returning to action next Saturday versus Mount Holyoke College. The Lyons and Lyons are slated to play on Clark Tennis Courts at 1:00 p.m.
