Wheaton's eight-match winning streak snapped at nationally-ranked WellesleySeptember 19, 2006 WELLESLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end Tuesday afternoon at nationally-ranked Wellesley College, as the Lyons dropped an 8-1 decision to the Blue in each team's third New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match of the season. Wheaton, which had its winning stretch intact since last spring, falls to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. Wellesley, which entered the match ranked 23rd nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), raised its overall and conference records to 3-0 with the win. Senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) picked up the Blue and White's lone victory to keep her single mark perfect, as she posted a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 win over sophomore Jennifer Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central) in the second position. Wellesley's remaining five singles wins came via straight sets. In doubles play, the Lyons nearly registered a point at number three, as sophomores Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) dropped a 9-8 final to junior Jenny Kendall (Auburn, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) and sophomore Jane Booth-Tobin (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis South). The hosts completed the doubles sweep with 8-1 and 8-2 triumphs in the first and second spots, respectively. Wheaton breaks from dual match play this weekend in order to compete in the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament held at conference member school Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
