Wheaton duo draws weekly NEWMAC honor for second straight week
September 11, 2006
NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's tennis standouts Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) combined to be named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Doubles Team of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 10. It marked the second straight week a pair of Lyons drew doubles honors from the conference.
Jackson, a junior who earned the singles player-of-the-week nod last week, and McDermott, a senior, won three matches last week while allowing a total of three points and improved to 5-0 for the season at second doubles. On Labor Day, the tandem picked up an 8-1 win over Gordon College, and the duo blanked Clark University during Wheaton's NEWMAC opener on Saturday. The next day, Jackson and McDermott combined for an 8-2 win against Union College.
During the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, Jackson and McDermott combined for a 5-8 doubles record together before hitting their stride this fall. The Lyons have won seven straight matches since last spring and are 5-0 for the first time since 2003. At 1-0 in the conference, the Blue and White is tied with three other teams for first place and has outscored opponents 38-7 overall this season. Wheaton hits the road on Saturday for a conference match at Springfield College at 1:00 p.m.
