Wheaton off to first 5-0 start in three years following 7-2 win over UnionSeptember 10, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team continued its torrid pace Sunday afternoon against non-conference opponent Union College, as the Lyons picked up a 7-2 victory over the Dutchwomen at the Clark Tennis Courts to move to 5-0 for the first time since the 2003 season. Union lost its second straight match in as many days and fell to 0-2. Wheaton and Union began doubles play tied 1-1 until junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) picked up a key 9-8 win at number three to give the Blue and White a 2-1 edge heading into singles play. Senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) had little difficulty in the second slot, as the tandem earned an 8-2 win to improve to 5-0 on the year. Senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) battled senior Jennie Werts (New York, NY/Fieldston School) and junior Jessica Meola (Hartsdale, NY/Ardsley) at the top spot before succumbing 8-6. Singles action saw a trio of three-set matches and five Wheaton victories, led by Jackson's 6-0, 6-1 triumph at number one. Weiss won 6-2, 6-1 in the third position, while Milic-Strkalj posted a 6-2, 6-3 win in the sixth spot. McDermott and Knies both responded from one-set deficits, with McDermott turning back her opponent 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 at two and Knies winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at four.
