Women's tennis remains perfect with NEWMAC-opening victorySeptember 9, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team won its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener, 8-1 over Clark University on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts. The Lyons moved to 4-0 for the third time in four years, while Clark dropped to 0-2. The Lyons opened by sweeping three doubles matches, as senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) improved to 4-0 this year with an 8-0 victory at the second spot. Junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) notched an 8-1 win in the third position, while senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) finished off the sweep with an 8-3 triumph at number one. In singles play, Weiss and Milic-Strkalj notched 6-0, 6-0 wins in the third and sixth slots, respectively. McDermott at number two and sophomore Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) in the fifth slot yielded only one point apiece, while Knies corralled a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number four. At top singles, Clark earned its lone point behind freshman Celina Grisi's (La Paz, Bolivia/Mariscal Braun) first collegiate victory. Grisi notched a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jackson.
