Lyons win third in three days with 7-2 road triumph at GordonSeptember 4, 2006 WENHAM, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team captured its third win in as many days Monday afternoon, as the Lyons secured a 7-2 non-conference victory on Labor Day at Gordon College. Wheaton improves to 3-0 with the win, while the Fighting Scots opened their season today. Going with the same doubles lineup as yesterday, the Blue and White carried a 2-1 edge into singles play thanks to a pair of victories in the second and third positions. Senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) collected their second straight 8-1 win at number two, while sophomores Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) claimed an 8-6 victory in the third slot. Wheaton had little trouble in the singles portion of the match, registering five victories overall and four without allowing a point in the opening sets. McDermott and junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) accounted for 6-0, 6-1 wins at two and six, respectively, and senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the third position. Federico was victorious at number five, picking up a 6-0, 6-3 decision over sophomore Meghan Thomas (New London, NH/Kearsarge Regional), while Jackson defeated senior Diana Anderson (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) 6-2, 6-1 in the top slot. The Lyons have now outscored their three opponents, 23-4. The Blue and White will take the rest of the week off from competition and return to action Saturday for its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) home opener against Clark University at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
