Women's tennis trio earns NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week laurels

NORTON, MA- Three members of the Wheaton College women's tennis team swept the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Week awards for the week ending on Sunday, September 3.

Junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) was named this week's singles winner, while senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) were tabbed doubles team of the week.

The trio helped carry the Lyons to a 2-0 record over the weekend, as Wheaton picked up non-conference wins over Simmons College and Rutgers University at Newark. Jackson went 2-0 from the top position, yielding only three points against Simmons Friday before using a pair of 6-3 triumphs versus Rutgers-Newark on Sunday.

In their first two matches as partners, Weiss and Knies earned a pair of wins at the top doubles slot. Surrendering a total of three points, the tandem registered a quick 8-1 triumph versus Simmons before corralling an 8-2 victory over Rutgers-Newark.

Wheaton won its fourth consecutive home opener following its 7-2 decision against Simmons before sweeping Rutgers-Newark, 9-0 in Beard Field House.

Looking to make it three straight to begin the yearfor the first time in two seasons, the Lyons are scheduled to play Gordon College today in a non-conference match in Wenham at 11:00 a.m.
