Lyons open women's tennis season with non-conference victory

September 2, 2006

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive home opener with a 7-2 victory over two-time defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champion Simmons College on Saturday at the Clark Tennis Courts. Each team was playing its 2006 season opener.

The Blue and White began the day by sweeping the three doubles matches while yielding a total of seven points to the Sharks' tandems. Senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) teamed with freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) for an 8-1 win at the top slot, with Weiss competing for the first time since last October after spending the spring semester abroad.

Senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) also returned after a semester abroad to pair with junior Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) for an 8-3 victory at number two, and junior Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and sophomore Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) followed suit at the third position.

In singles action, a pair of Sharks pulled out three-set victories, but the Lyons notched four points to clinch the team victory. Knies allowed only one point during a straight-set win at number four, Weiss yielded two points in a third-spot win, and Jackson surrendered three points at the top spot.

Sophomore Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) and Simmons senior Vanita Kontrakul (Canton, MA/Canton) went to three sets in the five hole, with Kontrakul using a 6-1 win in the second set to force a deciding third set, but Federico pulled out a 7-6 win to claim victory. Simmons junior Kendra Currier (Worcester, MA/Notre Dame Academy) rallied from one set down at second singles to win 1-6, 6-4, 13-11, while sophomore Stacey Kohan (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) also came back at number six for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory.

The Lyons return to the Clark Tennis Courts tomorrow when they host Rutgers University at Newark at 1:00 p.m.
