Doyle wins top singles flight during Wheaton women's tennis invitationalApril 2, 2006 NORTON, MA- Freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) won the top singles flight to highlight the Lyons' competition at the Wheaton Invitational on Sunday at the Clark Tennis Courts. Wheaton opened its spring season by hosting Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University and Division I College of the Holy Cross during the non-scoring event. The Lyons placed two singles players and two doubles teams in the tournament, with Doyle achieving the most success. Doyle didn't drop a set as she rolled through the top draw, picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Roger Williams freshman Meghan Cornell (Clifton Park, NY) in her first match and then nearly blanking Salve Regina sophomore Louise Taylor (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth), 6-0, 6-1 in the final. Wheaton sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) fell in the opening round to the eventual second singles flight winner, Salve Regina junior Michelle Kennedy (East Moriches, NY/Westhampton Beach), by a 6-0, 7-5 score. Kennedy went on to defeat Holy Cross sophomore Katie Guarino (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial), 6-4, 7-5 in the finals. In top doubles play, sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) suffered a first-round loss to Salve Regina senior Marissa Giaimo (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and junior Karla Cynewski (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), who later fell, 8-0 in the finals to the Holy Cross tandem of junior Kerry Trimmer (Spring Lake, NJ/Saint Rose) and sophomore Amy Garrity (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes). The second doubles draw saw Blue and White junior Jessica Otto (Atlantic, IA/Atlantic) and first-year Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) fall in the first round to Holy Cross junior Meredith Bacon (Hanover, NH/Hanover) and sophomore Meg Moran (Concord, NH/Bishop Brady), a duo which downed Salve Regina seniors Alicia Wills (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) and Katie Wright (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln), 8-0 in the finals.
