Lyons compete at New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis TournamentOctober 14, 2005 AMHERST, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team competed in all six singles and three doubles flights at this weekend's New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) hosted by Amherst College. The Lyons finished play on Friday with a point to its team total and will determine their final standing at the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday. Sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) highlighted Wheaton's showing with an 8-6 doubles victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart Mount Holyoke College in the second position. The tandem eventually dropped an 8-1 decision to the third-seeded duo from Middlebury College. Wheaton's first and third doubles teams also competed against the tournament's higher seeds, as juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) fell 8-3 to number-one seed Amherst in the top position. Junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) rounded out doubles play with an 8-0 setback to the second-seeded team from Williams College. In singles action, the Lyons played nip-and-tuck in the second and fifth slots but were unable to advance past the opening rounds, as McDermott dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 decision to Wellesley College at number two and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) a heartbreaking 7-5, 7-5 loss to Connecticut College at number five. Jackson and Doyle suffered a pair of setbacks to opponents from Brandeis University at the third and fourth positions, respectively, while Weiss fell short of the opposition from Amherst College at number one and first-year Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye) dropped a straight-set decision to Wesleyan University in the sixth spot. Wheaton looks to complete its fall season on a high note at next weekend's NEWMAC Tournament hosted by Wellesley and Babson College. Earning the fourth seed in the six-team, single-elimination format, the Lyons are slated to play number-five seed Mount Holyoke on Saturday, October 22, at 9:30 a.m. Wheaton beat Mount Holyoke, 6-3 during the regular season.
