Wheaton clinches fourth spot in NEWMAC following 6-3 victory at SmithOctober 8, 2005 NORTHAMPTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team ended its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule on a strong note Saturday afternoon, besting Smith College, 6-3 to clinch fourth place in the conference and qualify for the league tournament beginning on Saturday, October 22. The Lyons stand at 7-4 on the year with a 4-3 conference record, while the Pioneers falter to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the NEWMAC. In doubles play, junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) posted Wheaton's lone point with an 8-6 victory in the third slot. For Smith, senior captain Camille Whitney (South Pasadena, CA/South Pasadena) and sophomore Seiko Fujii (Aichi, Japan/Hamden Hall Country Day), and sophomore Catherine Lydecker (Conway, NH/Kennett) and Talia Williams (Montpelier, VT) recorded a pair of 8-4 wins in the top two doubles slots. The Lyons bounced back to capture wins in five of six singles matches, with the only loss coming at the top spot, where junior captain Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) dropped a three-set decision to Whitney 6-4, 0-6, 2-6. Junior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) won 6-3, 6-0 at second singles, while sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) was victorious in the third position by a count of 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win at fourth singles, while Farmer registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the fifth position. First-year Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye) rounded out singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at number six. The Lyons finish their regular season dual match slate tomorrow, when they travel to Brunswick, Maine, to face Bowdoin College.
