Lyons succumb to MIT, 9-0 in women's tennis road matchOctober 4, 2005 CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Tuesday afternoon's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match. The Lyons fall to 6-4 on the season and an even 3-3 in conference play, while the Engineers retain their number-two league standing at 5-1 with a 5-2 overall record. MIT opened doubles play with a convincing 8-0 victory in the top position and a pair of 8-5 decisions in the second and third slots en route to an early 3-0 lead. Junior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) paired up at the number-two spot for the second time, while junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) sided in the third doubles position. In singles play, Gudonis had the tightest match of the afternoon at number six before falling to sophomore Lisa Shank (Thornton, PA/Agnes Irwin School), 6-3, 7-6. Junior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and Farmer each dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision in the second and fifth singles slots, respectively.
