Wheaton sends three players to ITA Regional TournamentSeptember 23, 2005 BRUNSWICK, ME- A trio of Wheaton College women's tennis players competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Tournament on Friday at Bowdoin College. Junior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) provided a highlight for the Lyons by upsetting one of eight seeded athletes in the 64-player field. Weiss knocked off sixth-seeded Angela Horner (Bismarck, ND), a freshman from Mount Holyoke College, by a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 final in the opening round. In her next match, Weiss fell to Middlebury College freshman Elizabeth Emery (McLean, VA/Langley), 6-2, 6-2. Wheaton junior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) also lost in the first round on Friday. McDermott dropped a straight-set decision to Amherst College sophomore Monica Snyder (Newton, MA/BB&N), 6-2, 6-1, while Jackson lost against Vassar College junior Kelly Graham (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk), 6-1, 6-0. In the 32-team doubles field, Weiss and McDermott dropped their first round match, 8-3. The Lyons fell to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tandem of senior Elaine Ni (Okemos, MI/Okemos) and junior Joanna MacKay (North Andover, MA/Central Catholic). The entire Wheaton team resumes its schedule with a 5:00 p.m. match on Tuesday at Clark University.
