Lyons post first sweep of season with 9-0 triumph at UnionSeptember 11, 2005 SCHENECTADY, NY- The Wheaton College women's tennis team completed its weekend trip to New York by blanking Union College, 9-0 in the Lyons' final match before beginning conference play. The win puts their record at 3-1, while the Dutchwomen slip to 1-3 on the season. Wheaton stormed out of the gates and captured all three doubles points, led by juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School), who posted an 8-3 decision at number one. Sophomores Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) notched an 8-6 win in the second slot and freshmen Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) and Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) were victorious 8-2 at number three. The Lyons carried their momentum into singles play, where they relinquished only one set on the way to completing the sweep. Weiss and McDermott breezed to straight-set victories, with Weiss winning 6-3, 6-1 at first singles and McDermott 6-0, 6-0 at number two. Jackson put away her opponent 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth slot, Milic-Strkalj won 6-3, 6-3 at number five and Farmer claimed a 6-2, 6-2 final in the sixth position. Doyle ran into a bit of trouble at number-three singles, splitting the first two sets with freshman Roni Brumberger (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) 6-4, 2-6 before clinching 10-7 super-tiebreaker decision in the third set. The Lyons return home Tuesday to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play against Babson College.
