Skidmore hands Wheaton women's tennis first loss of seasonSeptember 10, 2005 SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY- The Wheaton College women's tennis team played an extremely tight match Saturday afternoon at Skidmore College but could not seal the victory, as the Thoroughbreds swept doubles play en route to a narrow 5-4 win. The Lyons fall to 2-1 on the season, while Skidmore improves to 2-0 overall. Wheaton fought hard in doubles play but could not bring home a win in any of the three slots. The first tandem comprised of juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) dropped a 7-3 tiebreaker to Skidmore's top duo of senior tri-captain Madeleine Pauli (Uetikon, Switzerland/Hochalpines Institute) and sophomore Jenny Grabler (Needham, MA/The Rivers School). Wheaton's second team consisting of sophomores Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) was bested by Thoroughbred senior tri-captain Gabby Rosenthal (Mendham, NJ/The Pingry School) and freshman Stephanie Abrams (Avon, CT/Loomis Chaffee), 9-7. Freshmen Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) dropped an 8-4 decision in the third doubles spot. The Lyons turned it around in singles play with four wins, two of which went to three-set matches. Weiss and McDermott won in the first and second slots over Pauli and Abrams 7-5, 7-6 and 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, respectively. Jackson outlasted Grabler 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at fourth singles, and freshman Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye) collected a solid 7-5, 6-3 win over classmate Ashley McEvoy (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) at number six. Wheaton stays in New York tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference match at Union College beginning at 12:00 p.m. The Lyons are slated to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday, September 13 with a home match against Babson College at 4:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
