Wheaton captures 8-1 win against Plymouth State in season openerSeptember 2, 2005 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team opened its 2005 season with an 8-1 victory over non-conference foe Plymouth State University Friday evening on the Clark Tennis Courts. The Lyons took all but two sets in singles play versus Plymouth, which was also opening its season, and won two doubles matches by 8-0 scores. Wheaton swept all three points in doubles action, with juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) kicking things off with an 8-0 win in the number-one spot. Sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) took an 8-4 decision at second doubles after withstanding a challenge from Plymouth State senior Whitney O'Leary (Sagamore Beach, MA/Bourne) and junior Erica Huckins (Holderness, NH/Plymouth Regional). The Lyons picked up another 8-0 victory at number-three doubles thanks to the team of sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery). In singles play, Weiss paced the Lyons with a 6-1, 6-1 win over O'Leary at the first spot. McDermott, Doyle and Jackson were victorious at two, three and four, respectively, while Milic-Strkalj won at number six. Plymouth State senior Sarah Cole (North Waterboro, ME/Massabesic) notched the Panthers' lone point when she knocked off Farmer 6-4, 7-6 in the fifth position.
