Wheaton tennis teams garner ITA academic recognition, nine Lyon players selected for ITA Scholar-Athlete awardsAugust 3, 2005 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's and women's tennis teams had a combined nine players named to the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete program. In addition to the individual accolades, the women's team was one of 56 NCAA Division III institutions tabbed for the ITA All-Academic Team award. Wheaton registered a department-best 3.39 grade point average over the course of the 2004-05 academic year. To be eligible for the award, a program must achieve a cumulative 3.20 GPA or above (on a 4.00 scale) for one full academic year. All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2004 and spring 2005). Named ITA Scholar-Athletes while playing a significant part in the women's team award were sophomores Ashley Kriwinsky (Munson, OH/Hawken), Sarah Madeira (Southwest Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Sara White (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield) and freshmen Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends Central School). Kriwinsky has posted a 3.45 grade point average with a biology major, while Madeira possesses a 3.62 mark in pursuing a studio art degree. Also a studio art major, White maintains a 3.35 GPA. Jackson and Milic-Strkalj had impressive first years with GPA's of 3.87 and 3.79, respectively. For the men, juniors Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord), Jeff Selesnick (Concord, NH/Concord) and Brian Spielman (Madbury, NH/Oyster River) and sophomore Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) rounded out Wheaton's ITA Scholar-Athlete selections. Potter and Spielman carry 3.53 and 3.54 overall grade point averages, respectively, in their pursuit of political science degrees, while Selesnick boasts a 3.49 mark in English. Stoddard tops the list with a GPA of 3.72 and double major in mathematics and economics. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year). Under veteran head coach Lynn Miller, the men reached a program-high tying 15 wins for the third successive year and advanced to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament title match with a 15-4 record. The women recorded an 8-8 overall mark with a semifinal round finish in the conference tournament. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 3/1/07. |
