Wheaton falls to The College of New Jersey, 6-3 in final match of seasonApril 10, 2005 EWING, NJ- The Wheaton College women's tennis team completed its season at The College of New Jersey Sunday afternoon, as the visiting Lyons dropped a 6-3 decision to the host Lions in a non-conference match. Wheaton finishes the year at 8-8 overall, while TCNJ is now 12-3 on the season. The Lyons managed to garner a victory in the top doubles position, but the hosts claimed the second and third spots for an early 2-1 lead. Sophomores Ashley Kriwinsky (Munson, OH/Hawken) and Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker) improved to 14-1 together in doubles play with an 8-5 victory over junior captain Jackie Gavornik (Millington, NJ/Watchung Hills) and freshman Christina Contrafatto (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). TCNJ recorded 8-1 wins in second and third doubles. Nationally-ranked Kriwinsky ran her singles dual match record to an outstanding 15-1 after defeating Contrafatto 6-3, 6-3 in the top position, while freshman Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) gave the Lyons their third point of the afternoon at fifth singles, besting Gavornik 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Wheaton first-year Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends Central School) wasn't as fortunate in her three-set match at sixth singles, falling 6-1, 2-6, 3-6 to sophomore Jackie Pryzbylkowski (Blackwood, NJ/Bishop Eustace). Weiss battled with sophomore Kristen Turturiello (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) before dropping a 7-6, 6-2 setback in the second slot. Senior captain Maris Madeira (Southwest Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) played in her final career match at third singles, where she suffered a straight-set loss to sophomore Ayumi Yamazaki (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ/Northern Highlands). Sophomore Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) also lost in straight sets to senior Katie D'Amato (Randolph, NJ/Randolph). This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
