Lyons capture three of four flight championships at Wheaton Invitational

April 3, 2005

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team pitted its top six players against the top six from visiting College of the Holy Cross, Roger Williams University and Salve Regina University in Sunday's Wheaton Invitational, as the Lyons captured championships in three of the four flights in Beard Field House. Wheaton was victorious in both singles flights as well as in second doubles.

Sophomore Ashley Kriwinsky (Munson, OH/Hawken), Wheaton's nationally-ranked first singles player, had little trouble getting through the top draw. Kriwinsky blanked Roger Williams freshman Caitlyn Leone (Irvington, NY/Hackview School) 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. In the other half of the bracket, Holy Cross sophomore Kerry Trimmer (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) posted a convincing 6-1, 6-0 decision over Salve Regina sophomore Michelle Kennedy (East Moriches, NY/Westhampton Beach). Kriwinsky then defeated Trimmer 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match.

At number-two singles, Wheaton sophomore Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker) rolled past Salve sophomore Kristina Kennedy (East Moriches, NY/Westhampton Beach) 6-0, 6-1, while Holy Cross junior Carrie Simmons (Raynham, MA/Raynham) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her Roger Williams freshman Kelsey Parente (Barkhamsted, CT/Northwestern Regional). In the final, Weiss needed a tiebreaker in the first set before posting a 6-2 decision in the second set to wrap up the straight-set win.

In doubles play, senior captain Maris Madeira (Southwest Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) comprised Wheaton's top tandem, as the pair went on to secure an 8-4 win in their first match over Roger Williams freshmen Jessica Manners (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) and Haley McCraven (Ipswich, MA/Newburyport). However, the top doubles draw belonged to Holy Cross junior Katie Irwin (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Rampo) and freshman Amy Garrity (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes), as they captured an 8-4 victory over Salve Regina and an 8-1 triumph against Wheaton.

The second doubles draw featured Blue and White sophomore Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and freshman Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends Central School), as the tandem began play with an 8-1 final over Salve Regina. Holy Cross sophomore Meredith Bacon (Hanover, NH/Hanover) and first-year Margaret Moran (Concord, NH/Bishop Brady) won 8-3 against Roger Williams to advance to the title match, where they dropped an 8-4 setback to Gudonis and Milic-Strkalj.

The Lyons will wrap up their spring schedule on Sunday, April 10 with a non-conference dual match at The College of New Jersey. Play in Ewing, New Jersey is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
