Lyons begin spring season with 6-3 victory over University of RochesterApril 1, 2005 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team started its spring season in strong fashion Friday night, defeating visiting University of Rochester, 6-3 in non-conference action in Beard Field House. The win moves Wheaton's season record to 8-7, while the Yellowjackets fall to 5-8 overall. The Lyons struggled through the doubles portion of the match, dropping matches in the second and third slots. The regionally-ranked duo of Ashley Kriwinsky (Munson, OH/Hawken) and Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker) were the lone winners for the Blue and White, recording a convincing 8-3 win in the top position. At third doubles, sophomore Jessica Otto (Atlantic, IA/Atlantic) and freshman Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends Central School) dropped a hard-fought 9-8 decision. Singles play was controlled by the home team, as the Lyons took five of six straight-set decisions to clinch the match victory. Weiss recorded her second win of the day in fine style, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles position. Kriwinsky won almost as handily, putting away her counterpart 6-0, 6-3 at number-one singles, while Milic-Strkalj was the third and final Lyon to blank her opponent in at least one set with a 6-0, 6-2 decision in the sixth slot. Senior captain Maris Madeira (Southwest Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) rounded out the singles victories for Wheaton, both winning hard-fought matches. Madeira was the last to finish, as she triumphed over junior Jaymi Della (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) 6-4, 6-3 at third singles. Jackson needed an extended second set to seal her win, topping junior Tessa Baker (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) 6-3, 7-5 at number five. The lone singles setback came at number four, where sophomore Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) lost to freshman Alexa Perry (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) 6-1, 6-3. The Lyons will take tomorrow off and return to the courts on Sunday, April 3 for their four-team Wheaton Invitational. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 3/1/07. |
