Lyons stave off Thoroughbreds, 5-4 in non-league women's tennis actionSeptember 11, 2004 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's tennis team continued its winning ways Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons swept doubles play in the early going and later held on in singles action en route to a narrow 5-4 win over Skidmore College. The victory moves the Lyons to a perfect 4-0 heading into conference play, while the Thoroughbreds suffered their first loss of the season. The Lyons set the tone early, taking all three doubles points with two close matches. Sophomores Ashley Kriwinsky (Munson, OH/Hawken) and Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker) pulled out an 8-6 win over senior captain Whitney Dolan (Cumming, GA/The Wesleyan School) and sophomore partner Madeleine Pauli (Am See, Switzerland/Hochalpines Institute) in the top doubles position. Sophomore Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and freshman Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) locked up another 8-6 victory at second doubles over junior Jill Damon (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and freshman Jennifer Grauder (Needham, MA/The Rivers School). In singles play, nationally-ranked Kriwinsky made short work of her opponent at first singles, taking a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory. Losses at second and sixth singles by Weiss and sophomore Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy), respectively brought the overall match score to 4-2, but soon after, Jackson registered the fifth and decisive point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over freshman Kate Hugo (Marblehead, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) at fourth singles. Wheaton will begin conference play on Tuesday, September 14 in Babson Park, where the Lyons will take on defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champion Babson College. The match is slated to begin at 4:00pm. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 3/1/07. |
