Four Wheaton tennis players earn ITA Scholar-Athlete honors

August 14, 2008

NORTON, MA- Four Wheaton College tennis players, including three on the men's side, earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2007-08 academic year.

A trio of sophomore men picked up the accolade, as Chapman Beekman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown), Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and Eric Pelletier (Bangor, ME/Bangor) drew their first ITA honors.

Beekman and Pelletier were also awarded with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference laurels in the spring, while Hudgins was voted to a NEWMAC All-Conference team for the second consecutive season.

Beekman, who is a psychobiology major, compiled a 3.58 grade-point average last year, while Hudgins carried a 3.83 GPA as a history major. Pelletier notched a 3.68 GPA in pursuing degrees in economics and international relations. The trio was three of 10 NEWMAC representatives among the 240 male Division III ITA Scholar-Athletes.

Representing the women was Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School). A four-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and three-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honoree, Milic-Strkalj graduated in May with degrees in German and philosophy after compiling a 3.96 GPA as a senior.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at his or her present school for at least two semesters.

Under 28-year head coach Lynn Miller, the women went 11-6 overall while advancing to the semifinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament. The men advanced to the league tourney semifinals for the ninth time in the conference's 10-year history, going 9-7 overall.
